Onitsha South Chairman's Impeachment Causes Ripple In Anambra APGA Saga

The purported impeachment of the Executive Chairman of the Onitsha South Local Government Area of Anambra State, Hon. Lady Ann C. Chukwuneke, by some councilors known to be hell-bent on removing the woman from office, in apparent abeyance to the letters and spirit of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, has been described as a dirty script allegedly written and dictated by the Anambra State Governor, His Excellency, Dr. Willie Obiano and Chief Mike Kwentor, the Anambra State Chairman of All Progressives Grand Alliance.

Lady Ann Chukwuneke who was sworn in as the Executive Chairman of the council sometime in February this year by the immediate past governor of the State, Mr. Peter Obi, had on assumption of office, vowed to flush out traders that had converted the major streets and drainages within the council jurisdiction to their personal use – using the same for displaying their wares, against the interest(s) of the general public.

Mama South as she is fondly called by her innumerable admirers, when she assumed office, met Sokoto, Bida and Iweka roads; Haruna, Kano and Modebe streets as no-go areas, as the traders erroneously blocked the roads, thereby, daily causing impenetrable gridlock, and making movement to and fro the popular Onitsha Main Market almost impossible.

Having lived in Onitsha South all her life and therefore  conversant with the chaotic terrain of the areas, Lady Chukwuneke took upon herself the task of reopening all the roads and drainages that had been blocked as a result of the nuisance caused by traders transecting businesses in unauthorized places.

In her capacity as the Executive Chairman of Onitsha South Local Government Area, and being therefore the Chief Security Officer of the council area, Hon. Lady Ann C. Chukwuneke on Thursday, October 16, 2014, took time out to officially visit the market to ascertain the level of compliance to her earlier directive for traders to tidy up the affected places.

On getting to Sokoto Road, according to an eyewitness account, hell was let loose, as an unruly mob, made up of persons suspected to be ass-headed traders, allegedly attacked and brutalized the first citizen of Onitsha South Local Government Area, Lady Ann Chukwuneke, and a number of other people in her company, including her police orderly.

The first few blows, according to the eyewitness account, dazed her so much so that she merely staggered, her knees knocking against each other, until she sub-coconsciously embraced a pole and wrapped her arms around it.

In that instant, her aides and sympathizers, who were equally targets of attack, managed to smuggle her out of the riotous scene.

Consequently, the matter, according to our source, was promptly reported to the police. Surprising enough, nobody was arrested in connection with the ugly incident, what though the apparently premeditated assault was carried out in broad day light.

Given this inexplicable and incomprehensible state of alleged police inaction, tongues naturally began to wag to the effect that the Anambra state Governor, His Excellency, Dr. Willie Obiano and the Anambra state APGA Chairman, Chief Mike Kwentor had allegedly ordered the Police in the State not to arrest anybody in connection with the overt crime.

Meanwhile, it was further gathered that the Vice Chairman of Onitsha South Local Government Area and Lady Chukwuneke’s subordinate, Hon. Alex Egbuna, as at the time of filing this report, is being dusted by the powers that be in the state to takeover the hard-won office of the bonafide  Chairman, Hon. Lady Ann C. Chukwuneke.

In bid to act out the purported messy script, twelve desperate councilors, yesterday converged at the Council Headquarters, under the guard of Supol-Tope-led, heavily armed policemen, and broke into the legislative council chambers and held what smacked of a kangaroo  plenary session.

However, because the Chairman was not on seat and not within sight, an impeachment notice was subsequently served the Executive Chairman, Hon. Lady Ann C. Chukwuneke through one of the office staff members, who gave her name as Anthonia Nweke.

A copy of the impeachment notice signed by the councilors and dated October 30, 2014, and which was made available to newsmen, revealed that the Onitsha South legislative council members were pressing on allegations of gross misconduct against the embattled Local Government Council Chairman, Hon. Lady Ann C. Chukwuneke.
