Nigeria’s former President Olusegun Obasanjo says that Nigerians have the right to seek external help over rising insecurity, killings and kidnappings in the face of seemingly government’s failure.
Ex-President Obasanjo, who declared that Nigeria’s government has shown its inability to protect Nigerians, condemned insinuations by government officials that those calling for necessary external support were unpatriotic.
The former President who was speaking at a public event as a special guest, wondered why rather than go after terrorists, Nigerian government was negotiating with them.
“No matter what religion you belong to, no matter where you come from, no matter what profession you are in, we Nigerians are being killed, and our government seems to be incapable of protecting us. We are part of the world community, and if our government cannot do it, we have the right to call on the international community to do for us what our government cannot do for us.”
Obasanjo further queried why rather than be firm Nigeria’s government was being apologetic to the terrorists. “Why rather than sleep them, take them off, we are apologising. We are negotiating.”
The Ex-President added that with drones available in the global security architecture, it was now easier for Nigeria’s government to “take out” the terrorists in any part of Nigeria.
