Breaking News: Eke Awka Market Fire Incident Destroys Properties Worth Million of Naira

The busiest domestic market in Awka, Anambra state capital, popularly known as Eke Awka Market has in part been gotten by fire in the early hour of Sunday, 29,June, 2014.
The fire incident which started between the hour of 1 -2 a.m today, was rumoured to have been ignited by a minor electric spark within the cloth sellers line before it later extended to other part of the market.

Rumour Of Osun Commisioner for Finance Arrest In Delta Is Untrue--- Bolohunduro

OSUN COMMISSIONER ARRESTED IN DELTA, RELEASED •IT’S UNTRUE, I DIDN’T GO TO DELTA —COMMISSIONER
Osun State Commissioner for Finance, Dr Wale Bolorunduro, was on Friday evening reportedly arrested by men of the Delta State police command in Warri, Delta State alongside some security escorts but was releaed on Saturday morning.
But Dr Bolorunduro told Sunday Tribune that the report was false, noting that he was not in Delta State but in Lagos with his family.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), reacting to the report, called for a thorough investigation into the matter, alleging that the Osun State government had been making threats ahead of the 9 August, 2014 governorship election in the state, that it would cause mayhem.
Speaking with Sunday Tribune, Mr Ojo Williams, Osun PDP legal adviser, urged the police to investigate the matter thoroughly, alleging that the All Progressives Congress (APC) government in the state had been recruiting all manner of thugs from all parts of the country for the August election and that the commissioner’s arrest with armed escorts vindicated their allegation.
Though details of the arrest are yet to be made public, police sources revealed that the commissioner’s arrest was not unconnected with the six mobile escorts he reportedly engaged in Delta and who were also said to have caused commotion at a hotel in Ugheli.
Police sources said though the commissioner claimed he was in Ughelli to attend a ceremony, he was queried over how he came about the escorts who came in a bank’s security van with upturned registration number BDG 618 AA. The police are also said to be investigating the culpability of the mobile men who, they alleged, might have left their duty posts.
The commissioner countered the claims while speaking with Sunday Tribune, saying: “Ask them to produce their report; at least if they arrested anyone, there should be a report. On Thursday, I wanted to go to Delta State but I could not because I was with the governor on the programme, Gbangba D’ekun. I went to Lagos on Friday morning, thinking I would catch a flight to Delta but I didn’t get any. So I stayed back in Lagos with my wife and family. You can send a reporter to me in Magodo, I am there presently as we speak.”
“I don’t know where they got that story from and it is not fair bringing my former employer into that kind of dirty politics,” he said.
The commissioner was said to have lodged at the hotel in Ughelli with the said escorts, where they reportedly fired gunshots into the air and teargas at the hotel lodgers as well as residents in the area, which attracted the attention of men of the state Dragon Patrol unit.
According to police sources, who claimed they were yet to conclude investigation into the matter, the Osun commissioner admitted that the security escorts were with him after two of the escorts were arrested, while the others fled.
The situation reportedly degenerated when they refused the entreaties of the men of the police command who were drafted in to restore peace. The escorts and the commissioner, it was said, took off in their vehicles with the men of the police command in hot pursuit.
“The escorts started firing at the policemen when they were asked to stop,” a source said, adding that “you can imagine it. But our men were able to overpower them. They arrested them in Warri. It was when they were being interrogated that we realised that a state commissioner was involved,” explained one of the sources.
The commissioner and the escorts, according to sources, who were transferred to Asaba in the early hour of Saturday, were released on the orders of the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Ikechukwu Aduba, while the police public relations officer, DSP Celestina Kalu, insisted that investigation into the matter was in progress.
Mr Williams advised the Federal Government to take keen interest in Osun State over the continued threat of violence being made by APC and Governor Rauf Aregbesola.
“Governor Aregbesola has vowed to cause mayhem in Osun and he has been saying it everywhere he goes. We know that the APC government has been recruiting thugs, arming and training them in some locations in the state. The Federal Government must not take the threat lightly.
“What we have in Osun at present is worse than Boko Haram,” Williams alleged.

BOKO HARAM: CAMEROON ARRESTS 50 NIGERIAN BUSINESSMEN
Cameroon’s military authorities said they arrested 50 Nigerian businessmen for allegedly collaborating with the Boko Haram insurgents, just as Cameroonian soldiers killed 10 suspected members of the Islamist group.
The Wednesday killing, according to the Voice of America, took place in Mora along the Cameroon border with Borno State.
The military said, in addition to killing some of the militants, it confiscated vehicles, a large number of weapons, and detained dozens of Nigerians on suspicion of aiding Boko Haram.
The spokesperson for the Cameroonian military, Colonel Chioka Pierre, told the VOA they had been conducting sweeps as part of an intensified crackdown on persons behind violent incidents in Cameroon, believed to be connected to the Islamist insurgents.
He said they had been searching border villages to prevent incursions or to stop militants from using the country as a hideout or launching pad for attacks. According to him, local residents are cooperating with the military to root out Boko Haram suspects in the area.
There have been reports of strange faces seen in the border villages and residents said they were afraid Boko Haram might be recruiting young, unemployed people in Cameroon.
“We are seeing most of our graduates every year having no jobs. Tell me, if somebody comes and proposes a high sum of money to join this organisation, most youths are desperate, they will be forced to do everything to get into these extremist activities,” Bipong Dennis, a Cameroonian said.
Military spokesperson, Colonel Didier Badjeck, acknowledged Boko Haram had become a serious threat in northern Cameroon.
He said the security situation in northern Cameroon was getting worse and the terrorist group was a threat in terms of recruiting young people, killing, looting and stealing.
Two weeks ago, Cameroon’s military also detained 40 suspected Boko Haram militants in Maroua and sealed off a market where they suspected terrorist could be hiding arms.

American Senate Frustrate Effort Against Boko Haram Insurgents—RICE

AMERICAN SENATE FRUSTRATING EFFORT AGAINST BOKO HARAM —RICE
The United States of America has said its efforts towards assisting Nigeria in fighting the Boko Haram insurgency are being hampered by its Senate.
The US’ National Security Adviser, Susan Rice, said the country’s Senate delay in approving President Barack Obama’s ambassadorial nominees was hurting America’s national and African security, particularly in the fight against terrorism in Nigeria.
“I am focused every day on keeping our country secure and our citizens – at home and abroad – safe. But these goals are hindered and our stature abroad is weakened when we are not fielding a full team. That’s why I urge the Senate to let the President’s qualified ambassadorial nominees get to work on behalf of the American people,” Rice said.
According to her, 16 of the ambassadorial posts are in Africa, adding that the Republicans in the US Senate have refused to confirm Obama’s nominees.
“In Africa, a quarter of our ambassadors are awaiting Senate confirmation. And in combating regional instability and serious challenges such as Boko Haram, key partners including Niger, Cameroon, and Mauritania – as well as our delegation to the African Union – need ambassadors in place now.
“And with the US-Africa Leaders Summit planned for later this summer, it’s crucial that we display our commitment to partnering with leaders from across the continent for the good of Africa and the United States,” the American security adviser said.
Rice added that President Obama had been waiting for at least five months for the Senate to confirm the appointment of his nominees.
“Right now, 48 nominees for ambassador are pending and 26 are on the Executive Calendar and eligible for confirmation by the full Senate — 16 of whom are career Foreign Service Officers.
“Together, all ambassadorial nominees have been waiting an average of 161 days, while those on the Executive Calendar have been waiting an average of 262 days. This is simply too long,” she said.

US Issues Security Alert To American Citizens Residing In Nigria

US MISSION ISSUE SECURITY ALERT TO AMERICAN CITIZENS IN NIGERIA
Against the backdrop of growing terror attacks in the country, most recently the June 25 bombing at EMAB Plaza in Abuja, the United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a strong security alert to her citizens- resident and travelling to the country.
The alert, which traced the history of bombing attacks to weekends, especially those associated with holidays and the fact that the Ramadan fast started this weekend, advised all US citizens to take extra precautions for their personal security and safety.
American residents and travellers to Nigeria were advised to be vigilant, particularly around churches and other places of worship, locations where large crowds may gather, government facilities and areas frequented by expatriates.
The Mission noted that security situation in Nigeria remained heightened due to threats posed by extremist groups, forewarning her citizens to expect additional police and military checkpoints, additional security, and possible road blocks throughout the country.
The embassy urged against non-essential travel to or within Abuja in the course of the weekend.
The US Mission recommended that American citizens travelling to or residing in Nigeria should enrol in the Department of State’s Traveller Enrollment Program (STEP), adding that such enrolment provides them with the latest security updates, as well as affording them prompt access to the nearest US Embassy or Consulate in the case of an emergency.

Ekiti: Rights group wants probe of INEC ballot papers before Osun poll

The Nigerian Human Rights Community has called for a public inquiry into the type of ballot papers used for the Ekiti State governorship election so as to ascertain or disprove claims that the ballots were photochromic papers programmed to skew victory to the side of the Peoples Democratic Party.
The rights group said this was necessary before the August 9, 2014 governorship election in Osun State.

INEC REMOVES AKEJU AS OSUN REC •REPLACES HIM WITH AGBAJE
Barring any last minute change,the Osun State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Ambassador Toyin Akeju, will this week proceed on leave ahead of the state governorsip election slated for August 9, 2014.
A reliable source at the INEC office in Oshogbo, Osun State, told the Sunday Tribune that the REC in Kogi State,Mr Segun Agbaje, is to take charge in the state from this week .
The decision was taken last week during the routine meeting of the National Chairman of the Commission, Professor Attahiru Jega, with the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), RECs which was attended by the National Electoral Commissioners.
According to the source,”the change is overdue and as the Commission is preparing to deliver a free and fair election in Osun as was done in Ekiti State, there is nothing new about it. The man in question is going on his annual leave and there should be no vacuum.”
A High Court had ruled that the state REC should be removed having been linked with a national leader of now defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), but the Commission had refused to carry out the ruling, saying that it would not act on mere rumour.
Though Sunday Tribune could not reach the Chief Press Secretary, to the national chairman of the Commission, Mr Kayode Idowu, one of the national Commissioners of the Commission confirmed the development, saying that they wanted to give Nigeria the best and nothing more. Osun REC is only going on leave,” he confirmed.

Imo state Government Hits Back At Charley Boy

MIXED REACTIONS TRAIL OKOROCHA’S ENCOUNTER WITH CHARLY BOY
The drama that played out at burial of late Justice of the Supreme Court (JSC), Hon. Justice Chukwudifu Oputa, between the deceased son, Charly Boy, and Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha, has continued to generate several reactions.
Charly Boy had reportedly prevented Okorocha from making a speech during the funeral service, by snatching the microphone from the governor, just before he could say anything meaningful.
The junior Oputa had insisted that no politician should speak after the presidential address delivered by the Secretary to the Federal Government (SFG), Anyim Pius Anyim.
Reacting to the incident, the Imo State Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Valentine Ogbuehi, decried the action, saying honour, respect and recognition should be given to whom it is due.
The SDP boss said the governor’s presence in any function represents the presence of the whole state, stressing that any embarrassment meted on him is an embarrassment to the whole state.
PDP chieftain and Owerri-based legal practitioner, Joseph Ihemedu, said, “Charly Boy did what he did because he did not want any politician to play politics with the death of his father, based on experience.”
Ihemedu said, “You know that Oguta people have their own peculiar tradition and which must be respected by everybody who is in their community, no matter how highly placed in society.
“The burial is completely the affairs of the Oputa family, and as such, their wishes must be respected.”
National Publicity Secretary, Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA), Vitalis Ajumbe, on his part, said this has nothing to do with partisan politics, adding that it is very embarrassing for the governor to be treated in such a disdainful and disrespectful manner.
“What Charly Boy did to the governor is an embarrassment to the entire people of Imo State, which should be condemned by all decent minds,” he said.
Imo State chairman of the All Progressive Alliance (APGA), Chudi Onuzo, said he would not like to comment on the issue for personal reasons.
Meanwhile, another PDP chieftain, Ralph Obioha, said, “The governor got what he deserved. Remember what he did during the burial of the late Chief John Anyaehie at Nkwerre sometime ago.
“He got there and instead of talking something reasonable, he began to insult the President and probably because Charly Boy did not want a repeat performance of such, he prevented the governor from making any speech.”
