Benue State
Governor, Gabriel Suswam, has lamented that he was betrayed by friends
and close aides, adducing this as the major reason for his defeat during
the Presidential and National Assembly elections. Suswam contested the Benue North-East Senatorial seat but was roundly defeated by the incumbent Senator, Barnabas Gemade. He stated this on Friday at the Banquet Hall of Government House, Makurdi, the state capital, while assenting
the the bills on Chieftaincy Affairs and Revenue Enhancement, presented
to him the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Terseer Ayua.
PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan and the national leader of the All
Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Bola Tinubu, on Friday, went for
the broke over today’s governorship election in Lagos State with the duo
engaging in last-minute meetings with their foot soldiers to ensure
victory for their candidates. Jonathan, as the leader of the
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), flew into Lagos unannounced on Thursday
night and reportedly held a series of meetings with top members of the
party on how to ensure the emergence of Mr Jimi Agbaje as the next
governor of the state. Tinubu’s APC, however, drew the first blood
as it accused Jonathan of being in Lagos to execute an election rigging
plot. Jonathan’s PDP replied in equal measure, describing the allegation
as “repulsive, infuriating and deliberate to attack the president.”
Governorship and House of Assembly elections took place yesterday
across the country, in an election that witnessed a relatively low
turnout when compared with the turnout in the March 28 presidential and
National Assembly elections. And while the polls passed off without
incident in many places, in some states, there were violent incidents,
deaths, and reports of electoral malpractice. Exit polls and early
results from the polling units indicated that the incumbent governor of
Ogun State and candidate of All Progressives Congress, Senator Ibikunle
Amosun, and the APC candidate in Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, who is
the incumbent Speaker of the House of Representatives, as well as the
Peoples Democratic Party candidate in Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa, and
his Rivers State counterpart, Nyesom Wike, might be winning the race in
their states. Okowa was leading in his Delta North senatorial
district, with reports of excellent performance in the other two
senatorial zones. In Owa- Oyibu, ward 1, PDP scored 5,145 votes, APC
polled 1 vote, and Labour Party had 1 vote. In Ute-Okpu, ward 9, PDP had
1,953 votes, APC had 3 votes, and Labour Party had 8 votes.
Despite apprehension
expressed earlier that Ekiti State was one of the possible places where
violence might erupt in Saturday’s elections, the exercise was smooth
throughout the state. As results trickled in Saturday night, the State
Governor, Ayo Fayose, paraded the streets of Ado-Ekiti in celebration of
his party’s victory in the House of Assembly election. The
governor, who drove in a motorcade from his hometown, Afao-Ekiti to the
state capital, said his party’s victory had confirmed that the people of
the state were solidly behind the PDP. “We defeated the All
Progressives Congress in all the 16 local governments in the
governorship election last June. We repeated the same feat by winning in
all the councils during the recent presidential and National Assembly
elections.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), in Lagos, Akin Orebiyi, has
said there will not be rescheduling of either the Governorship or House
of Representatives elections in any voting unit in the state.
Speaking with newsmen at the Independent National Electoral Commission
(INEC) office Saturday night, he stated emphatically that all voting in
the state had ended. Orebiyi, who spoke just before
midnight on Saturday, said that all was then set for the collation of
votes from the local government area, adding that the final results
could be announced by midday on Sunday. He applauded the performance of INEC during Saturday’s elections, which he described as wonderful.
Rivers State Governor
and Director-General of Buhari Campaign Organization, Rt. Hon. Chibuike
Rotimi Amaechi has described Saturday’s Governorship and House of
Assembly elections in the state as a sham. Amaechi made his position
clear while fielding questions from journalists after casting his vote
at Ward 8, Unit 14, Ubima in Ikwerre Local Government Area of the State. He said the elections witnessed thuggery and ballot box snatching in most parts of the state.
Referring to the election, the governor said: “I think it is a sham.
You noticed what happened in Omagwa, what happened was that somebody
called me and said they were been attacked at a particular polling booth
and I went there, the thugs were overwhelming until another group of
soldiers came before they ran away.

The Igbo in Lagos have appealed to Lagos State government and the state
Commissioner of Police, Mr Kayode Aderanti, to put security measures in
place to ensure the protection of their lives and property after the
general elections. The appeal came just as they demanded an apology
from Oba Rilwan Akiolu of Lagos over his comment that the Igbo would
perish in the Lagos lagoon, in seven days, if they did not vote for his choice governorship candidate in yesterday’s elections.
The Chairman, Ohaneze Ndigbo in Amuwo Odofin local government area,
Chief Akalika Emmanuel, explained that the call for the protection of
life and property became necessary to avoid unforeseen circumstances.
