Sources close to the administration confirmed to Sunday Tribune that the shakeup would affect some ministries that hitherto failed the performance evaluation scorecard of the administration....
It was gathered that some parastatals agencies whose heads were adjudged to have fouled government’s procedures may also be affected by the clean out.
Sources close to the administration told Sunday Tribune that one of the quick decisions taken by the top echelon of the administration was to prevent any of its officials taking decisions that could give the government a bad name when it eventually hands over to the new government.
A source said that while the number of those to be affected is still being compiled, the decision has already been taken. A source stated: “Mr President has told his close aides to desist from doing anything that can be used to tarnish the image of his administration and in that respect, some of the officials whose records of performance had remained at borderlines would be asked to go.
“In some places, permanent secretaries or those next in line to the DG would be asked to take over.”
The source, however, said that the issue of handing over notes could delay the implementation for some days, adding that once the handover notes are presented as required, any of the affected officials would be asked to go.
“The president is mindful of what could happen in the twilight of an administration, if the leaders are not watchful. Remember that any untoward action would be blamed on the president and he has stated clearly that he can defend his actions, both before men and before God. He does not want anyone to do things that would tarnish his name,” another source said.
When asked whether the big stick would also affect those appointees who failed to deliver during the presidential election, the source said that the president had put the issue of election behind him and decided to leave everyone to his or her conscience.
“Mr President promised to conduct a free and fair election. He is happy his government has conducted a credible election. He is happy to sacrifice his personal ambition for the peace of the country. Remember, he had promised not to seek re-election, if the constitution had been amended to accommodate single term of seven years for the president and governors.
“What he did not bargain for was the level of conspiracy in the system. But he has taken the whole thing in his stride and has decided to return home a fulfilled man,” the source told Sunday Tribune.
