2015 Election Focus: Do Not Throw Nigeria Into Anarchy, IBB Warns

Former Military President, Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, IBB, has cautioned politicians not to throw Nigeria into chaos as they embark on their campaigns for the 2015 general elections.
IBB noted that the way political officeholders and seekers were overheating the polity showed that the country may plunge into anarchy if nothing was done.
Gen. Babangida expressed the fears yesterday at the presentation of two books authored by the Director-General of the National Teachers Institute, NTI, Dr. Aminu Ladan Shareru held in Murtala Square, Kaduna. The former Military President said that “politics is a game that produces a winner and not all contestants will emerge victorious at the poll. Therefore, losers must learn to accept defeat with grace and prepare for another race at another time.
Represented at the event by Brig- Gen. Dantsoho Mohammed (rtd), Babangida charged politicians to tread softly as the campaign for 2015 gathers momentum.
He said: “I wish to advise politicians to be careful and responsible as they start their campaign trains. Nigerians deserve nothing less than the dividends of democracy that will grant minimum comfort to them.
“This is what is required to take youths off the streets, restore the confidence of the disenchanted and provide succour to the poverty-stricken masses of this country. This is what is needed to check the menace perpetrated by militants and Boko Haram insurgency,” Gen. Babangida said.
Kaduna State Governor, Mukhtar Ramalan Yero said no amount of fighting or violence could bring one to power but only God does and pleads for peaceful co-existence among the people in the state and the country as a whole.
Earlier, the Sultan of Sokoto, Dr. Sa’ad Abubakar tasked people with knowledge of Islamic religion to imbibe the culture of educating others with the basic aspect of Islam wherever they find themselves.
The Sultan, who was represented by the Emir of Zazzau, Dr. Shehu Idris, said Nigeria is a country with diverse culture and religious backgrounds where the people speak different languages and urged them to propagate Islam through their dialects.
The author of the book (Shareru) said lack of knowledge of Arabic was no more an excuse not to learn the basic facts and principles of Islam.
