Appoint new judges for Anambra - Registrar

By Abuchi Onwumelu, Awka
The Chief Registrar of the Anambra Judiciary, Mrs Doris Ezeani has appealed to the National Judicial Council (NJC) and the state government to appoint more judges for the state.
Ezeani, who made the call in an interview with newsmen in Awka on Wednesday, said that the state judges were over labored with cases.
“We are in desperate need of more judges. It is almost getting to a crisis situation as the number of judges is at its lowest point of 18 where the minimum should have been 23.
“The 18 judges have a total of 8,653 cases pending before them with a particular judge having 876 cases, another judge, 626 cases and yet another judge, 579 cases in their various judicial divisions.
“The list is 163 cases and it is due to the peculiarity of the court. You can imagine what the 18 judges are passing through. They are being over-laboured,” she said.
The chief registrar noted that due to the work load, the actual number needed was 35 to fast-track the process of service delivery in the state judiciary.
